Acromyrmex versicolor, they are fun and all but they aren’t very active and are kind of small. To me they just seem like a poor man’s Atta.

Strumigenys or any weird looking cryptic for that matter. It’s definitely a case of “it looks cool so it must be cool”

Both Camponotus Modoc and Camponotus hurculeanus. They are super slow growers and have very small appetites compared to my other colonies. I find some Camponotus awesome but all the species I have kept are super boring.

So far, I have never kept an ant species that seemed boring or overrated. I think all ants have something different and interesting about them. Although I will admit that I am sure that there are some species that are overrated, I'm sure they're not boring.

Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?

There are so many fascinating ants right were you live!

I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that are not found in your area.

Ya, I wasn't talking specifically about yours, I was just saying in general.

The flipside of yesterday's thread: what is the most overrated ant species?

I'll start off with Camponotus castaneus. It is a beautiful species and somewhat hard to come by in much of the country, but colonies grow very slowly and are maddeningly inactive almost all the time. This species also usually does quite poorly in captivity for some reason. In terms of ant-keeping, I consider these definitely overrated.

I couldn't 2nd this anymore. I might not even go looking for camponotus this year. Its the fact that you HAVE TO hibernate them. I have skip hibernating all my Camponotus the last 3 years and none have survived.

Keeps: Camponotus, Tetra

Wants (Please reach out if you have them for sale if you’re in the US): Acromyrmex Sp., Atta Sp., Cephalotes Sp., Myrmecocystus Sp (Prefer Mexicanus), Odontomachus Sp. (Prefer Desertorum), Pachycondyla Sp., Pheidole Sp (Prefer Rhea. The bigger the better. Not the tiny bicarinata), Pogonomyrmex Sp (Prefer Badius)., Pseudomyrmex Sp. (Prefer the cute yellow ones)

In my opinion you should hibernate all of your ants (exception for nonnatives).

I disagree, Stigmatomma are rather overrated in some cases. I went through a phase with them once and that lasted until I found out that queens can take 6-12 months to found and their colonies rarely exceed 20 workers. They're also picky about their diet from what I've heard, only eating geophilid centipedes.

Camponotus, as others have mentioned above, is definitely a pretty overrated species. Although that's probably just because I would rather not hibernate them. Solenopsis are fun to keep at first, but get way too uncontrollable over time. Immeasurable numbers, voracious appetite, and a tendency to escape and potentially wreak havoc on other species.

I cannot describe how correct this is.
