camponotus help how to catch wild colonies

There is a neighborhood park in my area and I am thinking about capturing a young camponotus colony. (There are over a hundred colonies). So any ways how to catch them. I have been eyeing a colony that lives in and under a small piece of rotten wood. Any ways to catch them and some tips on camponotus. Thanks🐜🐜🐜🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🐜🐜🐜

I did not find the Carpenter ants but did find a single Florida harvester ant queen which is weird for this time of year🤔🤔🤔🐜🐜🐜

I don’t recommend collecting established colonies from the wild. It is disruptive to the ecosystem and unnecessary. Be patient and collect newly mated queens next year.

The only way I have ever captured a Camponotus colony was when it was in a single piece of firewood.  And that was in the winter, when I could shake them into a formicarium with no trouble because they were dormant.


My father always said I had ants in my pants.

Not planning on catching a wild camponotus colony any more but does anybody have an explanation to the harvester ant queen.
