Found in Lakewood Colorado on 8-31-22 at 5:30 pm @ 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Found in a small park. Pic should give you some idea of length and color.

Probably lasius or possibly a winter ant (aka false honey pot ants) queen

Its definitely lasius, probably L. neoniger.

She died

and I haven't found any more in the area. Do these ants usually fly at night? Are suburban parks a good place to look?

Looks like she was already dead in those photos. Lasius queens fly on hot, humid afternoons. Suburban parks with lots of grass would be excellent places to look for L. neoniger.
