Yep, definitely an aphaenogaster megommata queen. These guys are extremely rare and hard to find, likely due to being completely nocturnal. Go to the full post

Found this girl in the Mojave a couple weeks ago, pretty sure she phedole but not too sure after that, she's 1 centimeter long, and I'll get better pics if needed 20220825_132739.jpg 20220825_132737.jpg

Never heard of that name in my life are they not common in Cali?

L. neoniger, P. occidentalis, C. modoc, C. novaeboracensis, C. vicinus, T. immigrans, A. occidentalis, S. molesta, P. imparis, M. kennedyi, M semirufus, F. pacifica, P. californica, M. ergatogyna.

 

Previously kept species

T. rugatulus, B. depilis.

Myrmecocystus pyramicus, Myrmecocystus testaceus

Pheidole creightoni, Pheidole inquilina, Crematogaster coarctata, Crematogaster mutans

No way that’s a Pheidole looks more like an aphenogaster to me which is rare in CA


I keep: C. modoc, C. sansabeanus  :D, C. maritimus, Formica argentea, M. mexicanus  :D, Odontomachus brunneus :D, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus,

I compared it to other Aphaenogaster megommata pics and pretty confident that's the queen I got :)

I agree with the Id, as mentioned hard to find due to nocturnal habits but not esp rare.
