I think I found it... take a look at the second ant in this video. I thought it was Formica since I didn't know of any lasius that were black and red like that... I was corrected and told that it was "some kind of Lasius" but I could not tell which. Normally emergantes are light brown... I have a small colony for a bit last spring.

These ants live in dirt and can hold out against the pavement ants which we have TOO MANY of. I like them so far.

I'm going to get a worker and add it to my pinning collection and work on an exact ID for the colony. It's fairly large and robust. I think I have a good chance of finding a queen at some point.

This is so fascinating. They are probably chasing the cockroaches in apartments. Honestly, I feel like they are doing humans a service!
