Also, are there any insects or bugs that I find when black lighting that I should NOT feed my ants that will hurt them? Or is anything free game?

Because you can shine the light on it, so it reflects the light over a greater area. Imagine a lake versus someone spraying a garden hose into the air.


Species being kept:

 

 Solenopsis "plebeius", Camponotus maritimus, Formica cf. subaenescens, Formica cf. aerata, Lasius cf. americanus, Lasius aphidicola, Lasius brevicornis, Lasius nr claviger, Nylanderia vividula, Temnothorax nevadensis, Temnothorax chandleri, Temnothorax arboreus Solenopsis validiuscula, Solenopsis truncorum, Solenopsis xyloni, Formica perpilosa, Formica cf. lasiodes, Formica cf. neogagates Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex salinus, and Myrmecocystus testaceus!!!!

 

Hoping to find this year:

Myrmecocystus, Liometopum occidentale, Camponotus essigi, Camponotus fragilis, Manica bradleyi, Formica perpilosa, Pheidole hyatti, and a Parasitic Formica sp.

 

People are stupid. It explains a lot...

I personally don't feed mine June beetles, because 1. They smell horrible when you cut into them, and 2 most my ants don't even eat them.

I wouldn't feed my ants any bugs I catch from black lighting. Granted I live near downtown so even my city spreads pesticides. But by catching bugs and feeding you always risk bringing pesticides into your colonies and killing them. At least that's what I've learned lately.

You may find some tiger beetles. I have never tried feeding them to ants, but they don’t have much meat on them. Tiger beetles in Virginia u believe are emerging now.

to fix this problem just boil or freeze the insects. that will kill any harmful things on the bug

I'm not so sure it would do anything if the bug has already ingested poison. I think it would get rid of anything ON the bug. But not IN

I often attract some  c h u n k y  m o t h s  when I'm blacklighting and my ants seem to like those and they aren't dead so they're fine. Although, I am blacklighting in a suburban area so if you live in the city there might be more pesticides.


My Ants:

Colonies: Camponotus humilior 1w, Opisthopsis rufithorax 11w, Aphaenogaster longiceps ~5w, Pheidole sp. ~235w ~15m, Iridomyrmex sp. 2q 1w, Brachyponera lutea 6w, Crematogaster sp. ~20w, Podomyrma sp. 1w

Queens: Polyrhachis cf. robinsoni, Polyrhachis (Campomyrma) sp. (likely infertile)

Previously Kept: Colobopsis gasseri, Technomyrmex sp., Rhytidoponera victorae, Nylanderia cf. rosae, Myrmecia brevinoda/forficata, Polyrhachis australis, Solenopsis/Monomorium

Thanks guys for all the input! I didn’t get anything that night and I forgot to update the progress. But I hope to blacklight some this week. Supposed to be very hot and have showers periodically!
