Euthanasia , best way ?

What is the best and least cruel way to kill some unwanted pets?

 

Just to eliminate they?

To save for later study?

 

I have been using the freezer.  Is there a  better method?

Freezing is quick and painless for insects.

Why would you kill your unwanted queens instead of attempting to sell them?

Why would you kill your unwanted queens instead of attempting to sell them?

Maybe nobody wants them or they aren't interested in selling the colonies. If you could though, I would let native colonies go or give them away.

Maybe nobody wants them or they aren't interested in selling the colonies. If you could though, I would let native colonies go or give them away.

 

Releasing captive colonies is generally frowned on.

Because I am out and about, from close to the river to high desert, I spot ant mounds.  For over two weeks now, there has been some where there is activity.  These are not queens, but some of the workers.  The queens are not out yet.   When I spot one, often times I will stop and check them out.  If I don't recognize them, I will catch a couple and take them with me.  Then when I have time and better lights, etc. I will study them for IDing purposes.   After I am finished with them, what should I do.?  I may not be back to their nest area for weeks.  I don't want to just dump them out someplace, they could never get home.  They cannot exist out someplace by themselves.  

 

The main reason is if I find some that I don't have and want, I now have an idea of where to go when they do start their flights, and I go searching.

 

Thanks ANTdrew,  I now don't feel quite as bad.
