So, I was wondering if olive oil will work as a barrier.  Thanks!

It works, a friend use it for his lasius just fine.

I've used it a couple times, and although it works, it should be applied sparingly. Olive oil also needs to be reapplied every once in a while due to the oil's tendency to conglomerate, and stick together. Don't use it for tertamorium, as they have been known to eat various oils, likely for vitamin supplements. When ants are first exposed to olive oil, they tend to walk over it, especially larger and more agile ants. After a while though, the ants seem to avoid the oil whenever possible.
