I found this guy today whilst searching for a queen. Took me 5 hours and the only one I could find is this one ... although I'm starting to think that it may not be a queen... What do you guys think?

Edit: Is it possible that it is a spider? I'm counting 8 legs ...

Is there wing scars on the thorax? If so it’s a queen. I think I may see some but I can’t tell with those photos.

I'm trying to get better pictures but I don't have any good macro lens nor are my eyes good enough to tell the difference 😅

But the back end looks like a wasp and I'm counting 8 legs Or are those 2 in front her antenna?

The antenna are straith.
Do you think this could be a wasp? o.o but it doesn't have wings, possible?

yea I think it’s a wasp. There are wingless wasp that exist. If the antenna aren’t bent than it’s not an ant.

well if there’s not wing scars it’s most likely not a queen. It’s also most likely not an ant if the antenna are strait.

I would recommend waiting for someone else to identify cause I suck at identifying but I was just trying to help you out. But I believe it’s not an ant at all.

I started thinking so as soon as I noticed that her antennas looked more like leggs xD
Well, that's 6 hours of my life gone with no progress ...

I feel like ant keeping here in Japan will be a lot more troublesome. There is basically no community here nor is there any info about nuptial flights 😓 Well let's try again after work to find some ...😅

Okay guys, I'm 100% certain it's actually a spider mimicing to be an ant, she made a web around her .... so she/he made it very obvious right now ^^"

there is actually quite a large community of japanese antkeepers, they just rarely frequent the English speaking forums or sites. They seem to be particularly active on youtube or instagram in my experience, so that’s a good way to find local keepers.

Also I'm assuming you’re an expat/non japanese? That may explain why its hard to find people.

Yep, foreigner living in Japan. My Japanese is good enough and I found 2 guys who are active ant keepers, sadly they live in Tokyo and aren't really keeping any journals of when they catch which species. But indeed like you say, youtube and instagram are some of the only ways to find them 😅

If you look very close you can see the patella ( an extra segment) between the tibia and femur...upshot, it's a spider

It's a spider that mimics ants, not a queen sadly
