On June 25th I caught 4 P. magnacanthus queens at my local park at about 6-7pm. Once I got home I immediately put them in a test tube as I decided to try a four queen poly.
Note I also found P. californicus on the same day.

As of July 26th only two of the queens are still alive. Their test tube is messy so it is very hard for me to see much.
Here are some pictures

Those are not P. magnacanthus, the eyes are way too small.

You may be right after checking out some pictures of P. californicus and P. magnacanthus my queens do seem to have oddly small eyes to be magnacanthus however they also seem to be a little small to be californicus unless the red form is smaller then the bi-color form?

The "costal" P. californicus is smaller than the inland/desert P. californicus. it also isn't unusual for Pogonomyrmex to have some noticeable size variation of gynes within colonies.

Ok they probably are the costal P. californicus then.
