Large Black Queen identification

Hi All

 

Funny enough, my cat found this one running across the living room floor yesterday. I live in northern Indiana, she's very large about 1/2 to 3/4 " long and completely black. I tossed her in a small formicarium I had available (I would have put here in a tube but didn't have any ready) and she's already laid a couple of eggs.

 

I don't have much more information than that. The photo is kind of hard to make out, so if needed I'll keep trying to get a good one.

Looks like Camponotus pennsylvanicus, but anyone elses guess is as good as mine

Probably Pennsylvanicus but need better pics to verify.

A. versicolor, C. us-ca02, C. yogi, C. Vicinus, C. laevigatus, C. clarithorax, C. maritimus, C. ocreatus, M. mexicanus, M. placodops 01, V. andrei, V. pergandei, N. cockerelli, P. barbata, P. montanus

Hoping to Catch This season:

M. romanei, M. placodops 02, P. imberbiculus, Polyergus sp., F. moki, A. megomatta, Cyphomyrmex sp.,Temnothorax sp.

that looks like C. Pennsylvanicus, but try to get a better picture. 


Ants are Pets, not Pests. 

 

-Camponotus sansabeanus

-Camponotus US-CA02

-Camponotus vicinus

-Formica podzolica

-Monomorium spp.

-Pogonomyrmex californicus

-Solenopsis spp.

Here areprobably the best pics I can get in this enclosure. It's so hard because she's so dark and the nest material is a dark gray (I might try to get her to leave and go into a tube instead so I can monitor her better.)

Definitely Camponotus pennsylvanicus.

i would move her into a test tube until she gets workers. Having a lone queen in a huge nest is not a good idea.

Yes I was thinking the same. I’m planning to set one up for her today and I’ll connect it to the enclosure to hopefully entice her to move.
