Merry (late) Christmas everyone! So the ants ate all their eggs becausse I visited my grandmother for three days but they have five pupae! Their first worker should be eclosing soon.

I'm very sorry that this update didn't include pictures. There is an urgent emergency, I spotted mites on a worker! I quickly isolated her and put in a lime to hopefully repel the mites. I know some of you might say I won't work, but believe it or not, it has worked before if you recall my late Camponotus parius colony.

It's Chinese New Year! Yesterday...but the holliday hasn't ended yet so it doesn't matter.

 

Anyways, here are your long-awaited pictures!

Here are three pictures of a worker eating a mealworm. Sorry for the quality of some of the pictures.

In this one, you can see two worker easily but there are another two in this picture in the nest entrance.

In this one you can see the ant's wide open mandibles while it's eating.

And in this one is their nest which you can see two larvae and the mealworm the just brought in. They have about 7-9 workers now. This is also not their main nest, it goes much deeper in the middle of the setup.

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates. Been a bit busy recently but the colony is doing just fine, plenty of brood and they have expanded their nest. They now have about 12 workers. Besides the trap-jaw ants, I actually also have two other ants under my care rn. They are a small black Crematogaster colony with about 20 workers and a Polyrhachis cf beccarii queen with eggs!

So to deal with their trash and stuff which is attracting mites, I introduced a cleanup crew but the ants ended up eating them.

Happy April Fools day guys!

 

But for real, this update is a little concerning. The colony seems to be declining in numbers, only two to three workers are coming out unlike five to eight normally. I checked the nest a saw that there was very little brood and it seems to have very few workers as well, they could all be hiding where I can't see them but I'm not sure. Could be from mites which they STILL have despite many efforts to get rid of them, but they seem more to be sporadic rather than parasitic, or from the extreme heat during this time of the year where mass die offs are common. Springtails are now a lot more common in their setup.
