I found a Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen inside a log today.

She was oddly located at the end of the log with no workers or brood noticeable.

The log was filled with workers. I collected 10 with her. She was alone in a vial with 2 of them and they got along fine.

When I got home I put the 8 in the second vial inside the freezer for a very short time to transfer them.

When they all woke up everything was fine but one single worker started getting aggressive and attacking her.

Shortly after one of the majors joined in so I had to separate them all.

They were all clearly agitated, To be safe I dumped all the workers outside and kept only the queen.

Could my short freezing session of caused this somehow? Or maybe I just grabbed one that was not part of the colony.

I did grab a single worker that was near the log carrying food. Might have been going elsewhere.

I am not sure why this would trigger other ants to attack though unless the formic acid had something to do with it.

Curious to your thoughts.

Sometimes new queens can take residence in fallen trees that are already home to other colonies.

Sounds like the queen and workers are unrelated.

Thanks Terry that was my guess also.

I am confused as to why she got along swimmingly with the two I had her in the vial with though.

They were in there for at least 2 hours acting normal and interacting perfectly.

After I put them all in the same vial all was well except one single worker acting funny.

It was that "bad egg" that caused the trouble and then one other major joined in.

I would like to also note the major worker was getting along fine with her before also.

The attack of the one random worker who was acting oddly seemed to trigger something that caused the major to attack.

Curious to your thoughts.

I find that with camponotus, it is esier to add an unrelated worker, than say lasius. I am not sure why. Usually majors of any sp. Are loyal to only their queen, and are aggressive to others, while minors may accept the new queen.

Yeah, my first thought would be that you grabbed a worker that wasn't hers.
