Hello! My son and I just received our formicarium and are looking for a queen and a few workers to move in and make it home. We prefer medium to large and non hibernating. This will be a learning experience for both of us (though I’ve researched so I have an understanding to get us started). Non-hibernating/no-winter-cooldown would point toward desert species (aka mostly SoCal species, which will generally require or prefer heating in summer). You might want to describe a bit more of what you're looking for and also what kind of formicarium you have. I mean, I am trying to see if South Bay garage temps are cool enough for keeping most Camponotus, but if you have to put them in the garage over the winter, you almost might as well get a species with real diapause/hibernation needs. Otherwise, the only ants that I have been keeping in the house all year are:

 

Veromessor pergandei (SoCal/desert) and andrei

Camponotus fragilis (SoCal/desert)

Myrmecocystus mexicanus (SoCal/desert)

Novomessor cockerelli (often found in the desert)

Pogonomyrmex subnitidus (SoCal)

 

These aren't desert species but I kept them indoors for other reasons (like laziness):

Tetramorium (too small for my tastes but survives most conditions)

Liometopum occidentale (kinda small too, but thankfully bigger than Tetramorium; they probably would've done fine in the garage)

Prenolepis imparis (though I wonder if I should put them in the garage next time - they like it cold)

 

All other Camponotus and a couple Novomessor duds I put in the garage. Most Camponotus seem to prefer a cool period.

i live in nor cal but i live in sutter county if you want to drive like 2 hours i have a few colonys or i can ship some instead.
