It looks like the queen I captured isn't gonna found a colony, if she ends up doing so I'll be thrilled, but I'd like to buy a queen with brood.

My half brother and I want to use a colony to teach his children about ants and ecology maintenance, so I'd like to avoid stinging ants.

I don't have any single queens right now, but I do have small Novomessor cockerelli colonies for sale if you're interested. They're a hardy species and have the potential to grow

fast under the right conditions. They also don't sting

try for a large genus like camponotus, as they are easy to see and study. they do release small amounts of formic acid if they bite you, so just a heads up. they don't sting though.

I have been bitten by so many ants including Camponotus but it never hurts (exclude stigmatomma). Just if you are going to be sticking your hands in the tank or whatever you have them in don’t get Formica.

ever felt a camponotus novaeboravensis bite? they don't hurt super bad, but they have huge jaws, and you can for sure feel them!

Nope. The worst bite was from a stigmatomma from up in Toronto where my extended family lives.

the majors are over a half inch long, and their heads are huge! they are one of the biggest camponotus around here(except for americanus)

I let some Formica bite me, and it just felt like a little poke. Nothing too terrible. They were not able to break the skin. Several workers shot formic acid at my finger, but as the skin was intact, I did not even feel it.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
