I plan on buying some rectangular boxes from the container store and I am going to take two and stack them on top of each other. Then I will make a mini hearth esc shape on the bottom for a nest and a hole to use for exit tubing. The t would be for an outworld. I will post a pic of the finished design when done. Also can I have name suggestions.

Those things are 1x1x2 inches. You'd only be able to house small/tiny ants in these.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

that's why they are called founding nests. They can hold small colonies of large species and larger colonies of smaller species. Also i am sorry M ants I had this idea for a while I just needed a box.  Also added new box size.

second size is same height but its basically the smaller size setled on the side of eachother. These come from the container store.

There will either be a super small syringe sized tube or a hole to stick a syringe in.

Your basically copying what M_Ants did from what I see...


My Ants:
(x1) Campontous semitstaceus ~20 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Camponotus vicinus ~10 workers, 1 Queen (all black variety)
(x1) Tetramorium immigrans ~100 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Myrmercocystus mexicanus -1 Queen
(x2) Mymercocystus mimcus -1 Queen
(x1) Mymercocystus testaceus ~45 workers, 1 Queen

It’s similar that we are using the same boxes but I believe he is doing a side by side formicarium from last I checked while I am doing a stacking mini hearth style formicarium. If M ants wants me to change my design or credit him I will due to the similarities but I can assure you that I am not basing my design off of his exact design.

I highly recommend you design, create, and test an actual nest first before you go about asking people to name it.

 

ps, side-by-side doesn't differ much from top-and-bottom, even THA hearths offer both these options, and both are still put under the same name
