Have you successfully raised colonies in those nests?

I have to say, those nests do not look good.  Those mold dots are not a good sign.

The black dots are a byproduct of the certain type of plaster. I have a colony in a nest with these same black dots in it and they are fine. You hydrate it with a whole in the plaster. It works best with species like tetras, Temnothorax, and even solenopsis. No bigger than solenopsis invicta/geminata.

Is the yellow top a dye or something? Or is the plaster oxidizing lol

I'm not completly sure what the dots are but I have a colony dealing with the black dots and they are doing great. I think the yellow is oxidization.

Did you add metal shavings or something? I was joking about oxidation, and oxidation doesn't even happen that fast (I'm assuming the nest you're selling is new and unused), unless you also added a catalyst.

I've had it on the back burner for a long time (4-6 months) under my work bench light when I am testing things. I was just saying that it has been under high lights and the only othe thing added would be perlite but I can insure that the plaster has been tested multiple times and in all tests not slowed brood growth or cause any colony harm.

"work bench light"

"4-6 months"

Sounds like mold.

What plaster mix is that anyways?

I can't think of any plaster brands with random black spots.

What species did you put in it? Is it one of those hardy species that'll live anywhere?
