I have recently got a hold of a Pogonomyrmex Barbatus colony with one worker. Right now they’re in a mini hearth, top down style with the tubing rubbed down with steel wool. I have sunflower seeds and grass seeds. Should I feed them these seeds or should I give them insects. Do I need to give them sugars such as honey?

I would reccomend getting seeds that are specifically made for pogonomyrmex as some seeds that are availible at grocery stores and even just outside may be not safe for you ants.  I would also give them sugar and protein, but mainly seeds.

I think you should give them seeds primarily, and occasional insects are also good, they don't need any honey too. Also, many seeds at grocery stores are suitable for Pogonomyrmex, it's just that they are often treated with chemicals.

Pogonomyrmex' diet, in my experience, should be rougly 60-75% seeds, with the rest being insect protein. They will accept liquid sugars like honey, although I don't recommend offering it often, especially as the colony gets larger. Experiment with what seeds they like, and vary it. Grass seeds should be a good option.

Pre-COVID I got a small amount of organic amaranth and quinoa (separately) from Whole Foods, plus organic poppy seeds (spice aisle), all to supplement the seed mix I bought from Drew, and my Veromessor seem to love the first two in particular. They also love fresh dandelion seed (like from the yard).

Alright thanks everyone. I’ve gone out and collected some dandelion seeds and I will give them some mealworms.

my Pogonomyrmex have yet to refuse mealworms. on a lark yesterday i tossed in some little betta fishfood pellets and they sent a whole party to collect and store them

My P. occidentalis adore dandelion seeds. We don’t use any fertilizers/pesticides/weed killers, so they’re pretty safe as long as they’re from my yard.
