Could be anything without a description and picture. But, my initial, wild guess from the size, location, and time would be S. invicta.

Definitely need to be more descriptive than the size of a founding chamber...

Idk, but that is odd that she was in a founding chamber is she looks parasitic to me...
Polyergus perhaps?

That's exactly what I was thinking, I thought they just went to another colony to do what they do.Idk, but that is odd that she was in a founding chamber is she looks parasitic to me...

I found a parasitic queen under a rock a few days ago. Sometimes they will hibernate, then in infiltrate a colony in spring.

Could be a parasitic Lasius sp.

I didn't see the flight but saw a few of these two days ago, and another camponotus nearticus flight happened.

Is lasius interjectus parasitic?

Howdy! I have some experience with Polyergus. If she has sabers for her mandibles then she is not capable of caring for a brood. Most likely a parasite as you have suggested. Also it wouldn't make sense to hibernate for to long a period. She is only going to get weaker and will need her strength to dominate. I have kept Polyergus and Formica Fusca together without a queen until all the Fusca have been used up. Most of the time Polyergus did nothing but beg for food. They can feed themselves from liquid but most of the time begged to be feed. What ever she is she is a beautiful Red Queen like in Resident Evil.

Maybe lasius claviger.
#16 Offline - Posted May 6 2015 - 6:03 PM
Or interjectus as you have said. They are both parasitic. Either way I would boost her with lasius brood and maybe callow workers. Do you have measurenents?

I find that a lot of times they will put their larvae under rocks; even if the rocks are a bit farther from the nest.
