it's not easy to tell from that photo, but it looks to me like it could be a male carpenter bee.   I don't think it's a fly.

Going against my usual policy I took a look. This is a Tachinid fly.

I agree it looks like a Tachinid and I was about to type that when I scrolled down and saw your post.  Semester 1 with its intense morphology class finally came in handy!! :)

Thanks for the correction.  Can you spell that word phoneticaly so I can get an idea of how to say Tachinid correclty?
