Location: Los Angles, California.

Location of Collection: Playa Vista, just outside of the Bayona Wetlands, Found leaving a dirt hole along with workers of the colony. It appears to be where a mature colony’s nest exit is, preparing for nuptial flights.
Date Of Collection: Friday, June 12th, 2020.
Habitat of Collection: Tree Roots
Length: 1/4 Inch
Coloration: Black Head, Dark Maroon body, dark yellow gaster
Distinguishing Characteristics: Fairly long antennae, short legs. Going onto the top of the test tube and hanging from there, sticking itself down. Eventually it came back down from its place. It was running all over the test tube before that, and attempting to fly.
Nuptial Flight Time and date: I am fairly confident the colony I collected the drone from was having a nuptial flight, as there were a lot more elates leaving the nest exit. Time: 3:20 PM PST Date: June 12th, 2020

They will breed within the nest, but the males do often fly to other nests to mate. I haven’t seen females flying myself, although perhaps they do.

Females are generally wingless.
