New giant queen! Help!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and i apologize if i posted in the wrong thread. I need aome help in IDing a queen cought today please.

1. Campulung, Romania
2. Date of collection: 6.06.2020
3. Habitat of collection: Top of hill
4. Length (from head to gaster): aprox 2.5 cm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: i cannot provide to much detail here. 90 black with red hues on thorax i think.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Do not know what i can provide here
7. Distinguishing behavior: Lazy
8. Nest description: cought it in the dirt/field. No nest

9. Nuptial flight time and date: do not know

I only managed to take a picture with my pointy finger as reference

No picture of the area where i cought it but it was on arid ground, 2 days after a rainy day, on a top of a hill. A lot of big ants aroundz with red center body.

Any useful info.would be apreciated. Spexies, feeding habits, formicarium etc. Thanks a lot!!!

Did you post a picture in your reply? I can't see it. It'd be pretty hard to ID her without a picture. Judging by the size, I can only guess that it's some kind of Camponotus.

You have a Camponotus queen, either C. ligniperda or C. herculeanus. They are fully claustral and should be kept in a test tube setup and not fed until they have workers.


Currently keeping:

 

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

Temnothorax ambiguus

Prenolepis imparis

Looks like C. vagus.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I will do my best to post a better picture tomorrow as well as another 2 types of queens i cought. I think one is a carpenter ant for sure but your oppinion and approvment would be helpful. The other one is a redish one.

Camponotus camponotus sp, could be herculeanus, ligniperda, or maybe even vagus.

Totally Camponotus, I am not sure what sp. though, but that it totally is C. sp Queen.

Unfortunately one of the little small ones and the winged one died. I do not know the reason :( . The other 2 had laid eggs. <3 

 

Any additional info about how to raise them would be much appreciated :)
