First hand made Formicarium, thoughts guys?

I think sand would be good for species who's larvae need minute particles to spin cocoons to pupate, but like ANTdrew said, it might make the place a little more homey for the ants.

Yeah I thought that about cleaning ANTdrew. I’m planning to make another one to be honest for when the colony grows.
Still confused about what to do with the lid though? If silicone is the same as sealant I’d rather not seal it permanently down? Unless silicone can be removed? Sorry!!

Silicone is really easy to break, but it is strong and waterproof.

This forum is far, far more active than AC. A majority of folks on there are very inexperienced, too.

Thanks all. As I’m pretty sure I now have 2 different species (Lasius Flavus and Niger) I’ll be making another similar formicarium, will keep you guys updated!

Flavus and niger will have different colored workers so it will be easier to ID them then. Sand would help them make cocoons, but they could drag sediment in from an outworld depending on if said outworld has sand or dirt in it.
