[Ants_Dakota]

This is a camponotus colony that i collected 2 years ago, that has now died. I just want to find out what type it is. Unfortunately, it was took with a bad camera, but i still want to have your advice.

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Newton Hills(South Dakota)
2. Date of collection: Not sure. June, maybe
3. Habitat of collection: On grass. She was just walking around.
4. Length (from head to gaster): Not measured
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: An orange color
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Not sure
7. Distinguishing behavior: None
8. Nest description: N/A

9. Nuptial flight time and date: Not sure

I'd guess C. Novaboracensis or C. Chromaiodes

No way to tell species with these pictures. Much clearer ones are necessary.

No clearer ones can be obtained; the queen died two years ago.

I would actually go with C. herculeanus, but there is not way to be sure without extreme macro photography, or pictures under the microscope.

I'd guess C. Novaboracensis or C. Chromaiodes

Chromaiodes is not native to South Dakota.

I'm sorry, guys. It was a shot. the queen did die along time ago, and i just wanted to know what it was, as it was an interesting color and rare around here.

This is almost certainly Camponotus americanus. I had a C. americanus queen that looked just like that, as the northern specimens are generally far darker in color. Shame that yours died, mine did as well.
