Pictures, please.

I think that some sort of Lasius is possible with that description, but for any real ID we definitely need pictures.

Probably Formica pallidefulva species group, like Formica dolosa.

I too agree with Formica, but with these pictures, you can't go much further than that, and I am not a taxonomy genius.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

looks formica. The second pic is your best bet at identifying it...

yeah that's 100% pallidefulva group. The mandibles are way too obviously pallidefulva something. The colors make me lean towards dolosa, but the gaster looks a little bit large compared to my dolosa queen so I can't be absolutely sure.

Looks like a Formica that's for sure. If she's completely jet black than look for abdomen hairs, as that would be your best shot at a better ID. Also, don't use your phone camera to take pictures (I learned that the hard way by getting poor pictures myself)

These images are in my opinion not good enough to get beyond the genus at best.
