Would it be possible to rig up an auto hydration system for a nest that would hydrate periodically (on a timer or something)? Has anyone tried this before?

Most people use water tanks.

Instead of using a decent amount of money and time, you could just remember to hydrate them every few weeks or so.

Very wise advice, but I had such a system in mind for times when I wouldn't be around to hydrate their nest (e.g. vacation)

I see, then yes. A water tank with gradual release or maybe a counterweight system would work.

or a timed valve

Maybe use something similar to one of those automatic fish feeders, but with water instead of food.
