1. Location of collection: Central New Jersey
2. Date of collection: 11/16/2019
3. Habitat of collection: Asphalt driveway, next to front lawn.
4. Length (from head to gaster): approx 7 mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Red, Shiny
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Thought was a worker at first glance, but noticed thicker thorax
7. Distinguishing behavior: Was looking for a founding area?

I was picking up debris in my front lawn and driveway, noticed this shiny lady walking against the dull asphalt. It's been pretty cold recently but warm today, so was surprised to see her. I initially thought she was a worker but upon closer inspection am suspect. I haven't noticed any red ants around my house, mainly Tapinoma sessile from what I've observed, so I was curious.

Lasius claviger - a parasite.

Thanks! That's a new one for me, I guess I'll have to pass because I don't know how to go about finding a host Lasius colony and attempting founding a colony.

Unless someone in NJ is curious?

Here it is if you're looking for it: https://www.formicul...cial-parasites/

Also remember that you won't need host workers until after hibernation, so there is no rush.
