After feeding my small colonies, I realized how nonsensible Nanitcs can be. I, like many antkeepers were drawn to this hobby by AntsCanada's Fire Nation. So imagine my disapointment when my first workers arrived. Lol. Anyways, small colonies vs. Big colonies is like a prime example of expectation vs. reality.

Expectation: Ants will neatly put thier trash in drier and cleaner parts of the nest.

Reality: Ants put their garbage in the moistest, nastiest part of the test tube.

Expectaion: Ants will defend their nest.

Reality: Ants try to jump out of your tube and disappear forever. (Happened to me once)

Hopefully, if you have funny and or frustrating experiences with small colonies, please post it here. I hope we can find some solutions and have some laughs while we're at it. :D

Expectation:Ants to be foraging constantly, working endlessly to provide for their queen.

Reality: Ants stay in tube and do nothing all day.

Expectation: ants will love the super cool formicarium you made them/ bought.
Reality: they’d rather just stay in a nasty old test tube.

I got another good one.

Expecation: Simply shining a light on the old test tube makes the colony move.

Reality: The light causes massive amounts of condensation and stress, but the colony refuses to budge.

Expectations: I should not expose them to light, it will stress them. Light is good for moving.

Reality: Light causes stress and mass moving only when not wanted to. when provided with a nest light is ignored.

Expectations: they would like a nest rather than the dry peice of moldy wood they nested in.

Reality: The test tubes moisture is off by a micrometer, we like our old piece of wood better.

Expectation: Ants will nicely put their garbage onto one or two trash piles.

Reality: This only works for large colonies. Small ant colonies need a few months to agree on a trash pile location and during that time will just stick trash into any crack and below any piece of decoration they can find, dispersing garbage over their entire setup in the process.

Expectation: you think it will be so cool to dig up dozens of rare and hard to keep colonies.
Reality: you kill most of them and end up leaving the hobby on under a year, never to be heard from again on FC.

Just a pattern I’ve noticed in my time on this forum. It’s kind of stupid, but I miss many nice folks on here that just disappear. I think they go overboard and burn themselves out.

Expectiation: You've learned from your previous experience in these forums.
Reality: You're doing your best to look like a dick and end up wondering why nobody likes you.

Unfortunately this is a regular thing in antkeeping.

Expectation: ants will eat almost the entirety of their prey insects and chop it up into small peices

Reality: ants will only eat a bit of their prey and leave the rest to mold in their test tube

Expectation: ants will stay put and enjoy the space they have

Reality: ants will always try to find a way out of their setup by chewing the cotton or squeezing through small cracks

Expectation: ants will desperately try to find a new place to live when the water reservoir in their test tube runs out and the humidity drops drastically

Reality: ants are stubborn creatures and will stay in the now bone dry test tube
