Greetings all and thank you Andrew and Bryan for creating this new forum. It is easy to read and use(though pasting and linking don't seem to like IE much).

I go by PTAntFan because the PT stands for "part time" as I also work in IT and have a busy schedule. In fact, over the past three years I was also coaching basketball at the local high school and had no time for this great hobby. I currently have no colonies, queens or formicaria.

But that's come to an end and I want to get back into ants! And that's what lead me to this forum; Drew's amazing journal post.

Welcome, another local anter! I'm in the SGV and also fairly busy, but I've been trying to get out every weekend. Good excuse to go hiking/exploring.

Foogoo, where do you go and what are finding there?

These are the relatively nearby places I've explored:

Eaton Wash: nothing

Hahamunga Wash: Lots of Pogonomyrmex, one Myrmecocystus colony

Sycamore Park: nothing

Whittier Narrows: nothing (friend later saw a Pogonomyrmex colony)

Rio Hondo River: Lots of Pogonomyrmex, huge Dorymyrmex bicolor colony (appears to have moved)

Dirt sidewalk on my street: Dorymyrmex insanus, Pogonomyrmex (disappeared), Solenopsis (haven't seen this year)

This weekend I'm planning to check out Chantry Flats (friend says tons of Campnotus), Peck Park and Rio Hondo to find that bicolor colony again. I find a lot more species (and my first Dorymyrmex and Pheidole queens) out in Chino Hills. Have you found anything locally?

One thing I noticed about Pogonomyrmex californicus around here, is they are out all the way until December, and then go underground and don't come back out until May a lot of the time. All the disappearing Pogo colonies will reappear after May.

I haven't been out in so long that I am sure whatever I knew is mostly irrelevant now.  I've seen Pogonomyrmex in my neighborhood and up by Stough Park and I've seen some Camponotus, not sure which in Wildwood.  But I hadn't seen the Camponotus in a long time. I've forgotten most of what I've found in the past.  If you head over to the Yuku forum you can look at my profile there where i was pretty active in the past.

I think you're spot on. Walked down that stretch the other day and saw at least 5+ mounds with workers actively digging them out. Hopefully I'll be able to catch them when they fly!
