I think it's a queen judging by the shape. I have 2 odontoponera queens which are in good condition. While 1 has 1 fine antenna while the other one is in half. Would it affect anything? It still does have 1 functioning (I think) antenna

She's fine. The I've seen a Tetramorium queen with a broken off antenna, and she has a healthy colony.

Currently keeping:

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

Temnothorax ambiguus

Prenolepis imparis

Be honest, did you break that antenna trying to do something untoward to that ant?

please try not to do that again. Luckily ponerines have very tough exoskeletons.

when they feel like they are safe. they best way to directly handle ants is to grab a leg or the thorax. it just needs a little practice.

also cover them and give them some sand.
