Looks like a giant wolf spider, but the coloration doesn't seem right.

Not Hogna carolenisis, but H. antelucana.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
It’s basically a meme.Did you mean "spooder" in the title, or "spider"?

Definitely hogna sp. Good luck keeping them, they're awesome feeders and are almost like keeping T's but much more active and better hunters. If you keep them in a large setup you can actually watch them stalk and hunt their prey.
Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
Not keeping her, not allowed to kill insects. She was preparing to lay eggs.
schizocosa sp. probably maxima, any schizocosa 'mccooki' with a legspan greater than 2" is S. maxima.
note how the venter isn't solid black- there are light marking- and the sternum/coxae arent black but rather chestnut brown. Hogna antelucana's sternum/coxae/venter are always jet black.
Schizocosa maxima is the largest in the genus in north america- attains a body length in excess of 28mm and can have a 4" legspan.
was slightly more than 1 inch.

My mum considers feeding insects to predators killing them, same reason why I stopped antkeeping. I know spiders are arachnids.

That ID seems more accurate.

But the predator is the one doing the killing! Keep the spooder and feed it live crickets and cockroaches.
Really want to, mum thinks of it as me condemning the insects to death.(Poison gas kills people, not the gassers) Already let it go too.

Well, when feeding them live, and fully mobile, they have a chance of living, just not a very good one lol.
Well, when given a wet rag, they have a chance of surviving gas, just not a very good one.
