I'm finally back after a long break of not keeping ants but in the meantime I've been caught up with other different hobbies, and my current one of main interest is breeding fish, particularly dwarf south american cichlids, Apistogramma sp. Currently I have one female A. cacatuoides wild caught with about 20 fry and A. panduro pair with about 12 fry, and I also have a breeding pair of convict cichlids and a bunch of guppy fry. I used to breed bettas but now I'm taking a break from that since it's a major pain in the rear having to separate the male and female, not to mention the stress when they are actually breeding. I want to get into breeding other Apistogramma species as well as wild bettas and certain larger cichlids. So, anyone else breed or seriously keep fish?

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

Breed wild bettas, far less trouble than domestics. Until recently I had 35 tanks of various cichlids and betta species.

I'm mostly trying to breed mouthbrooders like albimarginata and channoides I've seen macrostoma offered a couple times but I've heard that they are a major pain to try and keep the males from swallowing eggs. A;so agreed, wild bettas seem much more compatible with each other and the captive strains have all asorts of problems, ranging from infertility, to even tumors and permanent blindness and missing fins.

Yah macs are tough, but with patience they will hold. If you can make past day three they usually hold.

That's what I've heard. Is it better to leave the female or remove her? If you leave her, wouldn't she just stress out the male more?

I always left them together, in my opinion, trying to catch the female is far more stressful on the male, as long as you have plenty of shelter leaving her is normally fine.
