Should I dig up a small Pheidole colony and keep it in a test tube

If that's what you feel like doing, go for it. Some people are pretty good at it.

I advise dumping them into a foraging area with test tubes inside, or attached to the foraging area. It will be much easier if it is a bigger colony.
Depending on the size of the colony, depends how easy it will be to locate the queen. From what I have seen, usually less than 10% of the total number of ants go out foraging. So the colony may be bigger than you think.

Yea ur right but i dug and only found 6 workeres and some brood that's all

It's probably best to wait until you know the colony will be close to the surface, and you have to dig much deeper and wider than you think the colony is. The colony would be at the surface for sure after rain (they don't want to drown).
