I was looking on AntMaps just now and found that there are several sightings of Pheidole moerens in the Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi area. And also some in Louisiana, Texas, and California, and Hawaii. But they aren't marked as "exotic," they are marked as "dubious." As in, the sightings of them were actually mis-identifications and would mean that P. moerens doesn't even exist in the United States. Here is the link: http://antmaps.org/?...heidole.moerens
But that can't be true. Drew had a colony of them, and I currently have a 30 worker colony of them. It doesn't look like they could be anything else. According to AntWeb, Florida has 20 Pheidole species and Pheidole moerens is one of them. I've looked at the others and the pictures of the queens look nothing like mine. Pheidole moerens queens are very tiny, and a very dark brown, almost black. I don't know of any other species like that.
So could this be some kind of mistake? Could there be a species that is common where I live and multiple other states that looks just like P. moerens?
