Dig up the whole colony?
I've never had luck digging up colonies like that in the ground. Some other people have. I only bother if they parked themselves in a gopher mound or something easy to sift through to locate the queen.
Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta
I never dug up a colony, but I already found some in dead wood, acorns or even in a plant pot.

if you find any mistakes, it's my autocorrection. it doesn't speak english.

It is just a simple Dorymyrmex colony.
I think that could be a number of species; it depends how big that is.
What is the diameter of this nest?
It was about 2 inches
You can see a worker in the entrance.
I can hardly see any worker, but yeah, that's Dorymyrmex insanus then.
