Down here in Australia we have surfing ants. I found the surfing ant while on a leisurely stroll along the beach with my lovely wife. There was a single R.metallica worker running frantically down the wet sand left behind after a wave receded, thinking this was a bit odd I decided to observe.

The ant was going full speed towards the water as the leading edge of a monster wave was bearing down on it (bubbly leading edge, about one inch high. Travelling about walking pace). When the wave was about to hit the ant turned and spread out a bit. I lost it in the chaos but sure enough I saw it about 2-3 meters back towards the dry sand floating on top of the surface tension. When the water flowed back out it turned and ran back at the water!

Too bad I had no camera :-( . Has anyone else encountered this?
