Collected July 21, 2018  This is a semi arid environment here.  Prairie grassland.

No, this is a velvet ant or cow killer wasp (family Mutillidae). Despite its name and appearance, this is actually a wingless wasp. They possess a very painful sting - hence the name "cow killer".
