			she does look Pheidole like.
My various Pheidole queens are in the 6-9mm range, and two at 14-15mm
anyway once you get workers, it will be easy to tell

#TeamPheidole, considering those big ocelli. Can you see that classic Pogonomyrmex beard?
Edited by Batspiderfish, June 26 2018 - 9:00 AM.
If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.
Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Hi folks. This is almost certainly a Pheidole queen, despite her similar appearance to many Pogonomyrmex ants. As noted by Batspiderfish, this queen conspicuously lacks the 'beard' that gives Pogonomyrmex their name. Additionally, her body structure (primarily head and gaster) does not fit that of Pogonomyrmex. Finally, if she measures 8 mm in length, that's on the small side for most North American Pogonomyrmex but consistent with many Pheidole queens.
Of course, additional photos would be useful for a confident identification.
