That would be a really neat nest! You just have too make sure you add sponges for humidity and ant-proof it!

Yeah I think you would cut out one of the compartments, add a sponge to it, drill some holes on the inner walls, and cover it with fine mesh.

Squirt water into sponge from small hole from the outside

If you could find a way to make that humidity last and also not flood it in the process, considering the price, you could probably find something for even cheaper in the dollar store near you and not have to wait for shipping.

you could also use something sharp like a knife or scissors to make the holes

I'm just gonna add my experience with keeping l. niger in those. The compartments sometimes are not air-tight and so ants can also cross those compartment walls which while not problem, i personally don't like

yeah though you could just remove the cover and find a thick plastic or glass sheet that fits perfectly ontop.

what about siliconing the pieces in place other than the top to the actual lid? but running a bead of silicone to the top and letting it cure and then when you snap the lid on the silicone would make up any difference in the height of the inserts?

The separate compartment lids allows for flexibility in cleaning etc

And block off sections to allow for gradual space expansion as the colony grows in size

These have potential for founding nests in place of a test tube. So cheap.

use two per nest. One at the bottom for the water tank, drill a hole to the top, cotton glove finger cut off and stuffed with cotton wool for water wick etc inside a vinyl tubing, maybe hot glue a mesh on top, so the ants can place brood on top.

Small hole in the side of the tubing for ants to drink

 

Or use them as a water tank under a petri dish founding nest
