From LCMlab.com/, I ordered (25) 16 by 150mm test tubes. Are these a good size? Thanks.

Species I keep:

1 Lasius cf. Neoniger 30 workers

1 Camponotus sp. 15 workers

20 Tetramorium SpE 30 workers

1 T. Sessile 200 workers

150mm should be fine for majority of ants.

The 16 mm diameter should be fine for larger ants, though smaller ants may find them very large.

13 mm is a better diameter for smaller ants.

If you aren't sure what size of ant you are targeting, a 16mm works just fine.  I use a 18mm x 150mm for all my species, although I do tend to favor the larger species.

That's the size I and everyone I know uses.

That size won't be an issue for small ants. Might be a little cramped for big ants but it should still serve you generally well.

A mature colony is really hard to achieve. You are taking about years. But, yes, it should be possible but would be pretty messy. If you have a colony of thousands of ants, they deserve a nice and proper formicarium.

while i will agree with dean, you can make an entire formicarium with test tubes and a foraging area.

It's be done before and it's quite effective for a small budget. Just add test tubes as necessary.
