Identifying males is very difficult. I don't think anyone here could give an accurate ID. Especially not down to the exact species. But they do have a Camponotus look.

I agree. At nine millimeters, the second is likely Camponotus.

The second one looks like a Camponotus pennsylvanicus male. I think the first one could be Camponotus discolor, as I caught some a couple weeks ago. Take this with a grain of salt though, lots of Camponotus males look similar.

Well it’s funny you say that because none of those species exist here haha. I’m good with just knowing the genus I guess.

BTW, the Camponotus species that exist in my area are:
C. clarithorax
C. dumetorum
C. essigi
C. hyatti
C. laevigatus
C. maritimus
C. quercicola
C. semitestaceus
C. vicinus
C. yogi
Sorry if this doesn’t help

Does that list of camponotus apply to the SF South Bay too? I'm still trying to figure out what we caught last week. Your list would help me refine what I should compare against. Thanks!

Thanks! Did you see my post "Saratoga, CA - 4/26/18". Just curious if you know what camponotus species it could be.
