I am currently keeping a Formica Subsericea queen who currently has a few larvae. Does this species of ants larvae require sand in order to spin their cocoons and what sand should I use?

No, mine don’t and are doing fine, they mak cocoons from the cotton in the test tube! I would recommend it though, it will help them feel more secure.

I would just sand for a gecko or lizard sand, I use orange crested gecko sand. Do NOThermit crab sand! It has too much dust which killed almost my whole colony!
