Hello everyone, I recently moved my large Nylanderia colony into a terrarium inside a aquarium tank. I am currently using olive oil as a barrier which has worked for the first 2 days but I am now noticing workers on the outside of the tank, my question is does baby powder mixed with rubbing alcohol work as an escape barrier on aquariums, does it bead up on the silicone edges like fluon does?

You probably need to remove the upmost 2-5cm of the silicone edges.

Use baby powder. As a general rule,
When in doubt, always revert to baby powder.

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

The mechanism of talcum powder as a barrier is a little different from fluon; as long as a good coating is left over the silicone, particles will crumble away under the ants' feet like anywhere else it is applied. It's a bit like trying to climb a pile of dry sand that is completely vertical.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

So straight baby powder works on the silicone? If so I'll try straight baby powder and if that doesn't work I'll try baby powder mixed with rubbing alcohol.

I was talking about the alcohol mixture.
