Location: Pikeville, Kentucky (about 40 minutes from West Virginia and and Virginia borders) in the Appalachian Mountain area.

Date of Collection: 8/15/17
Habitat of Collection: Urban setting near tree line of some forest.
Length: 7-8 mm
Color/Patterns: Reddish-Brown, more red in light, darker gaster and spot on “forehead”
Distinguishing Characteristics: Spot on forehead and fuzzy gaster.
Distinguishing Behavior: It is not parasitic, already has nanitics.
Nest description: N/A

Took 28 to 30 days for nanitics.

This is Pheidole; either Pheidole bicarinata or Pheidole pilifera.

 

I don't know if it would be more appropriate for you to title identification thread with the date of collection or date of publication; you'll have to ask a forum mod about that. Regardless, I appreciate your well-formatted and clear post.

Thankyou, I’ve been trying for quite some time to identify this queen (and now nanitics) for a while without disturbing her, although in the end this did not work. It said on the template that the title needed to include the date the topic was posted. Looking back, however, I do see that I forgot to add the location to the title and I probably should have left an indicator that it was the posted date, so my apologies on that note.
