Went anting today

Took a 45 min walk around the block after i found alates on my car. Found a few queens.

 

43 Lasius flavus

45 Lasius neoniger

9 Parasitic Lasius sp.

2 Brachymyrmex sp.

to be exact

 

I will be using these queens for testing dirt boxes.

 

Twas a great day

 

I'll be splitting these queens up into smaller groups once the rest of my test tubes arrive.

Congrats, to bad no nuptial flights are happening down here :(

were having a cold snap or something, I would have wanted to catch some lasius.


I accidentally froze all my ants

haha, i normally just take a walk around the block during heavy flights and find queens everywere on the sidewalk. I followed one queen to her hole which i then found another 15 queens inside.

Gotta say though, i lost quite a few queens due to the L.neoniger being a bully and killing off the slightly smaller L.flavus while waiting to be tubed up. My little brother and i spent a good hour with aspirators sorting out the queens.

 

Edit: Tonight or tomorrow night I'm gonna take a photo of the two species together and write out a comparison. Hopefully it'll help others from losing queens.

 

 

Today i'll be going out looking for more brachy queens. They were easy to find on dirt, but nearly invisible on cement.
