I've fed them some honey water and am going to give them a mealworm chunk is once a week to often to feed and should I do protein and sweets in the same week or alternate

give them a sugar source first, if they keep pulling at the cotton also feed them some protein. If they are happy with just a honey source onces a week and protein source every other week than that's fine.
