Out where i live you basically hit bedrock at one foot deep. I might be over exaggerating that a bit, but my question is, Would ants be able to dig deeper then the bedrock layer ? I've heard that some pogonomyrmex species can dig down two meters. But is that just in the desert or does it also apply to the bedrock mountains ?

Chances are that there are cracks in the bedrock and the ants will dig into those.

OK, I actually have this same issue. The sedimentary rock here in this area seems to go down a few feet, then become so hard you cannot dig. I have used mechanical tools to dig into this, but actually, after using that, there were no ants in it. I have seen several Pogonomyrmex subnitidus colonies around here nest over just one food of loose sand, and hen hit this stuff. I have dug various colonies up, and discovered that instead of going further down, they go side ways.
