Found these in my area while out walking around. I have never seen them before and honestly not sure they are queens or even ants. I happened across 20 or more RIFA queens in the last 24 hours but only saw two of these. I will try and get a better picture soon. Cell phone pics only atm

Those are velvet ants, a type of wingless wasp unfortunately

They still make good pets if you want to keep them, put them on some substrate and give them sugar water, they'll last a while. Just don't touch them, they have one of the nastiest stings in nature.

Sigh I thought they might be that I was just hoping for something else. The only ants I have seen here are fire ants and I was praying for something new.

For some reason, I get more excited when I find velvet ants than a new queen. They just look so cool.

The velvet ants in New England come in several sizes, its just the common ones are kind of small and skinny.

yea i had one on me yesterday and i think it stung me but it felt like a needle prick

I doubt that was a velvet ant. A velvet ant sting feels like you got a flaming-hot needle jammed into your skin several times.
