1. Location of collection:  Street curb near apartment complex 

2. Date of collection: 4/13/2017 right after rain
3. Habitat of collection: Grass and trees near the street curb
4. Length (from head to gaster): about 10mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: orange-ish head thorax and a brown/black thorax
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Definity looks like Componotus 
7. Distinguishing behavior: Pulling at cotton in her test tube sometime

The picture is very hard to make out, but I think you're right, it looks like a Camponotus. Possibly C. discolor, . decipens or C. sayi.

With any of those species, would I have to worry about soil for larvae/pupae?

I'm not too sure, I don't know too much about any of them. I suspect a little antwiki research would do the trick.

Impossible to tell the species, let alone the genus, without a proper photo.
