Hi eveyrone. I've been working on my formicarium.  I'm using a picture box, I have the clay already setup in the picture box... Today I am going to be working on filling the box with a substance and wanted to know what you all think I should use. I am going to use grout.

Thanks.

Updated# I used Grout

Grout over concrete any day. Concrete is by far one of the worst materials you can use for a nest, fresh concrete will harm ants and has to be eroded for years until it's really "safe" for ants.

Thanks. Grout from the local hardware store right. Lowes or Home Depot. I assume the one with Sand mixed in right.

Id like to use hydrostone but we don't have it here. Ill have to find it on line somewhere unless any of you can point me in the right direction.

Unsanded is preferred by many. Actually, it's good to buy unsanded but mix in play sand, there's a thread from Crystals on different ratios she experimented with. Sanded grout is pretty much water-proof.

I buy my hydrostone from plaster.com

I think it has better water retention than grout. But it also stains easily.

Concrete is really really bad. Not only is it potentially toxic it also takes weeks if not months to dry out entirely and all the time while doing so evaporates fumes and humidity which is prefect conditions for mold.

We should respect all forms of consciousness. The body is just a vessel, a mere hull.
